Kyla Artist Prize World Calligraphy Competition

Open call to all artists

I. Purpose of the Competition:

To promote the development of world calligraphy art, unite calligraphers from different cultures, and showcase the beauty of cultural diversity, Kyla Artist Prize is hosting the World Calligraphy Award. We sincerely invite calligraphers from the Muslim world, Japanese calligraphers, Korean calligraphers, Chinese, and Taiwanese calligraphers to participate.

 

II. Competition Period:

December 20, 2023, to April 1st, 2024

 

III. Awards:

1. First Prize: Physical medal, participation in the joint exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum from May 29 to June 4, 2024. Media exposure included in the exhibition catalog, featuring ten news articles in Taiwan, and three unified reports in Chinese news. 

2. Second and Third Prize: Physical certificate, featuring ten news articles in Taiwan, and three unified reports in Chinese news. Additionally, winners receive a one-year discount of 20% on international art fair participations at Butterfly Reflection International Curatorial.

 

IV. Eligibility:

1. Calligraphers worldwide are eligible to participate, regardless of nationality.

2. Individual or team registrations are accepted, limited to one submission per person.

3. A registration fee of NT$2500 is required, non-refundable.

 

V. Competition Rules:

1. No specific theme, encouraging creative expressions that reflect multicultural exchange.

2. Artworks must be original and not infringe on the copyrights of others.

3. Participants must provide a written explanation of the background and concept of their artwork.

4. Participants must agree to an indefinite, royalty-free authorization for the use of submitted artwork images and artist information for competition promotion.

 

VI. Competition Categories:

Youth Group: Ages 8 to 18

Adult Group (Unified Judging)

Competition Content

1. Artworks can encompass various script styles and textual aesthetics.

2. Artworks can utilize traditional or modern calligraphy materials, including brushes, ink, rice paper, pens, etc.

 

VIII. Size and Presentation (Scroll):

1. Each artwork must be presented in scroll form, with a width not exceeding 100 cm and a height not exceeding 200 cm. Three-dimensional artworks are not allowed.

2. Artworks already mounted can be hung or displayed.

 

IX. Registration Deadline:

April 1, 2024

 

X. Judging Criteria:

1. Artistic value

2. Technical proficiency

3. Creativity

4. Cultural expression

 

XI. Announcement of Winners:

The list of winners will be published on the Kyla Artist Prize official website on April 15, 2024, and winners will be notified via email.

 

XII. Other Considerations:

1. All submitted artworks will be held by the organizer and will not be returned.

2. The organizer reserves the right to use award-winning artworks for relevant promotion and exhibitions.

 

XIII. Judging Panel:

 

To ensure fairness and professionalism in the competition judging, we have assembled an excellent judging panel from various fields of calligraphy.
